Ella M. Zarwell, 99, New Albin, passed away Saturday, November 16, 1991, at Lutheran Hospital, La Crosse, Wis. She had been a resident of Thornton Manor, Lansing, Ia., for the past three months.
Ella was born May 30, 1892, in Jefferson Township, Houston County, Minnesota, to John and Irene (Tippery) Myers. She attended rural school in Jefferson Township.
On November 2, 1909, Ella married Henry P. Zarwell at the United Methodist Church in New Albin. Henry died October 12, 1961.
Ella was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, as well as its Women's Fellowship group. For more than 50 years, she was a member of the Royal Neighbors of New Albin.
Ella led an active life and maintained a lifelong interest in local wildlife found along the Mississippi River and the bluffs where she grew up and lived her whole life. With her 'green thumb', she was able to make any type of plant thrive.
Despite encountering major health problems in mid-life, Ella had an unwavering optimism, and her strength and courage were an inspiration to all who knew her. She held a special appreciation for those who visited her on a regular basis.
For the past twenty-five years, Ella was lovingly cared for in her own home on a day-to-day basis by her son, Herb. Her positive nature, keen mind and sense of humor were with her until the very end.
Survivors include one son, Herbert (Helen), and one daughter, Gladys (Raymond) Sires, all of New Albin, Ia.; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Floyd, one grandson, Neil, one sister, Clara Darling, and one brother, David, who died in infancy.
Services were held Monday November 18, at St. Peter's U.C.C., New Albin, Ia. The Reverend Dennis Siebert officiated and burial was in the New Albin City cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ray Whalen, Leo Whalen, Bernard Mauss, Cleon Sires, Forrest Sires and Delbert Fink.
Haugen-Roble Funeral Home, Caledonia, Minn., was in charge of arrangements.
