Merl V. Smith, 75, of Caledonia, Minn. and formerly of La Crosse, Wis., died Friday, April 14, 1989, in Tweeten-Luther­an Hospital, Spring Grove, Minn.

He was born Feb. 14, 1914, in New Albin, Ia., to Fred and Elizabeth (Hahn) Smith. He graduated from a rural school in Allamakee County, Ia., and was a veteran of World War II. He worked in the La Crosse Rub­ber Mills for 33 years until his re­tirement on Feb. 28, 1979.

He was a member of Mount Hope Presbyterian Church, Dor­chester, Ia., and a lifetime member of the Disabled Ameri­can Veterans.

Survivors include a sister, Mae Haugstad of Caledonia.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in the Mount Hope Presbyterian Church. The Revs. Louise and Douglas Gordon-Denniston will officiate.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the Haugen-­Roble Funeral Home, Caledonia, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday in the church.
