Helen Leona Jones was born August 17, 1917 in the Sixteen area of rural Waterville, to Jerry Myer and Kate Clare (Kennedy) Hamm. She attended the Sixteen rural school. As a young girl, Helen spent considerable time helping care for her siblings during her mother's ill health and following her death. On November 13, 1934 she married Carlton Floyd Jones in Waukon. Except for a span of 7 years in the mid 1940s, they lived most of their life in the rural Waterville area. Helen was a busy homemaker and mother and maintained an interest in church activities at a number of different churches she and Carlton attended.

Camping and traveling, music and dancing, and playing cards with the Golden Girls card club, were some of Helen's favorite pastimes. She also enjoyed spending time and playing various games with her family. She liked being with children and spent a lot of time helping to care for many of her grandchildren. Helen was very welcoming to guests and visitors, always making her home a comfortable stop for family and friends.

Survivors include her husband Carlton of Waukon; three daughters, Frances (LeRoy) Bollman of Waukon, Barbara (Edward) O'Connell of Eastman, WI and Connie (Duane) Leuenberger of Decorah; 26 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Bernice (Lester) Erickson of Rochester, MN; and a brother, Barton (Marilyn) Hamm of Waukon.
