Leona J. Cota, 96, of Harpers Ferry, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2006 at her home in Harpers Ferry. Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 27th at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Rev. Richard N. Eick and Pastor Lisa Schroeder officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Waukon.
Leona Julia Goebel Cota was born April 2, 1910 in Ludlow Township in rural Waukon, the daughter of Fredrick and Emilie (Blum) Goebel. She was baptized at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon and attended elementary school in Ludlow Township. Leona married Martin Cota in August of 1929 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry. They farmed in the Harpers Ferry area and also owned and operated the Cota Sawmill for many years. In 1946 they moved into Harpers Ferry. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and its ladies circles. Leona enjoyed having coffee and visiting with friends every morning at the Harpers Ferry Cafe. She also enjoyed cooking especially pies and spending time with family.
Survivors include her children, Charles (Shirley) Cota of Harpers Ferry and Janice Beachler of Dayton, OH; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Martin who died in 1972; a sister, Helen Vickery and two brothers, William and Albert Goebel.
Casketbearers were David and Casey Cota, Matthew Smead, Christan Cook, Richard Cota and Jim Adam.
