Marie G. Hoffman

Marie G. Hoffman, 80, of Waukon, died Monday, November 27, 2006 at her home in Waukon, following a sudden illness. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 2 at 11 a.m. at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon, with Pastor Judy Scheer officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Marie Gertrude Hoffman was born August 15, 1926 on her family's farm in rural Frankville, the daughter of John and Hertha Helen (Herman) Grotegut. She was baptized and confirmed at Salem United Church of Christ and attended the Frankville School through the 10th grade.

March 5, 1942 she married Harold Charles Hoffman at Salem Church. Marie and Harold farmed the Grotegut home farm near Frankville for 20 years. Marie was a busy homemaker and mother, but also very involved with all aspects of the farming operation. In 1966 they moved to Lamont for a few years and returned to the farm in 1970. Marie then spent 20 years working as a medical and physical therapy aid at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. The last several years she has lived in Waukon.

Marie was a very active member of Salem United Church of Christ, where she was an Elder on the Consistory and served in Women's Fellowship, Mary Circle, the Mission Board and various other committees. She was a long time member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was named their 2006 Member of the Year. Marie also volunteered her time at the Allamakee County Food Shelf and the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon.

Marie stayed active throughout her life. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially doing yard work and gardening. Inside, she liked to crochet, bake, and spend time doing genealogy research. In 1971 she studied for and received her GED. She was a faithful visitor to friends who needed help and enjoyed going on outings and attending community events.

Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn (Chuck) Erding of Forest City and Donna (Steve) Scarpulla of Cave Creek, AZ; two sons, Marvin (Linda) of Cedar Rapids and Harold Jr. (Dixie) of Aurora; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Esther Hanson of Waukon. Marie is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Harold, who died in 2000; two sons, Randal Alan and Ronald Lee; and a grandson, Eric.

Casketbearers were Tim Hoffman, Bob Baldwin, Duane Ties, Joel Hanson, John Opfer, Ryan Scarpulla, Ron Herman and Toshi Tawara.
