Wayne Arthur Headington, 53, of rural Decorah, IA, died on Saturday, November 10, 2001, at his home of an apparent heart attack. He was born on August 21, 1948 to Elmer “Guy” and Clara (Schuttemeier) Headington, at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon, IA. He was baptized on October 16, 1948 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Waukon, and was confirmed in April 1963 at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Eitzen. He attended Waukon High School and graduated with the Class of 1966.
On February 21, 1967 Wayne joined the United States Air Force serving in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. On November 23, 1968, Wayne and Brenda Burmester were united in marriage at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Wheatland, rural New Albin, IA. After being given an honorable discharge on February 19, 1971, he farmed in rural Waukon and in 1976 moved to the Burr Oak area. Wayne spent the past 25 years farming and “relocating” used farm machinery.
Wayne was a member of the Burr Oak Lutheran Church. He had a strong faith in God and believed in living each day to its fullest. He enjoyed spending “quality time” with family and friends and always made time for everyone. His humorous and fun loving personality, his positive attitude and prize winning smile will be remembered by all.
He is survived by his wife; three children, Sharlyn and Lynn Bibler, Shell Rock, IA, Daniel and Denise Headington, Cuba City, WI, and Marsha and Randy Swatek, Cresco, IA; five grandchildren; his mother, Clara Headington, Decorah; seven sisters and brothers, Burton and Lois Fruechte, Caledonia, Merle and Beverly Headington, Cedar Rapids, IA, Phyllis and Herbert Banse, Caledonia, Lyle and Lynn Headington, Mabel, Janice and Mark Numedahl, Decorah, Lila and John Cangemi, Jacksonville, FL, and Joyce and Dan Nelson, Las Vegas, NV; mother-in-law, Stella Burmester, New Albin; sister-in-law, Claire and Mike Kokoszka, Ft. Lupton, CO; brother-in-law, Stuart and Phyllis Burmester, New Albin; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Wayne was preceded in death by his daughter, Diana Lynn, on November 6, 1995, his father, Elmer Guy Headington on June 15, 1975 and by his father-in-law, Elmer Burmester on July 9, 1995.
Services were held November 14, 11 am at Burr Oak Lutheran Church in Burr Oak by Rev. Hans Floan, with burial in Burr Oak Cemetery, with full military honors by the Mabel VFW and American Legion.
Visitation was Tuesday from 4-8 pm at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Wednesday after 10 am at the church.
