Thomas Hansmeier

Thomas (Tom) W. Hansmeier, 74, of Waukon passed away Wednesday, October 4, 2006 at his home. Memorial services were held at Glenwood Church, Decorah Monday, October 9, with pastors Allen Hermeier and Curtis Fox officiating.

Thomas was born July 9, 1932 in Waukon to Elmer (Joe) Hansmeier and Ruth (Sherman) Hansmeier. He grew up on the family farm and went to school in Waukon until his high school graduation in 1950. He began his training in education at the University of Northern Iowa, (then the Iowa State Teacher's College) where he met his wife Jean (Niehaus). They began their married life together December 22, 1956. Their family grew to include Eric in 1957 and Wendy in 1959.

After completing his PhD in Education in 1963, he began guiding the next generation of educators as an Administrator/Professor. His service included a term at the University of Northern Iowa for the 23 years before his retirement. Prior to his employment with the University of Northern Iowa he taught at Michigan State University for two years, Kent State University for five years, Southern Illinois University for four years, and at the University of North Dakota for two years.

Thomas is survived by his wife Jean Hansmeier of Waukon; one son, Eric (Susan) Hansmeier; one daughter, Wendy (Richard) Sheridan; one brother, Gordon Hansmeier; three sisters, Marilyn Perin, Lorraine Peake and Maryjo Seaba; plus five grandchildren, Rachael Sheridan, Sarah (Mike) Clavenna, Chris Sheridan, Jessica Hansmeier, and Thomas Hansmeier.
