Mary Howes

Mary Howes, 88, of Waukon, IA, passed away Saturday, September 30, 2006 at her home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 3 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's of Hanover Cemetery, rural Dorchester. Hanson Funeral Home of Waukon assisted the family.

Mary was born September 19, 1918 in West Ridge to Charles and Sarah (Ryan) Kilpatrick. She attended school at Waukon High School and was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.

February 7, 1940 Mary and Cyril Howes were married at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, West Ridge. They lived in the Waukon area all of their lives. Mary worked as a CNA at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon.

She was a wonderful mother and granny, who will be dearly missed for her humor, wisdom and opinions.

Survivors include two daughters, Marie (Dale) Schwartzhoff of Dorchester and Bernita (Jim) Simmons of Marion; eight grandchildren, Kirk, Kyle and Kevin Simmons, and Jeff (Lisa), Nick (Lynn), Craig, and Brad (Kelly) Schwartzhoff, and Diane (Craig) Thier; and six great-grandchildren, Emily, Erika and Matthew Schwartzhoff, Megan and Abby Schwartzhoff, and Riley Simmons.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband Cyril, who died May 15, 1985; and seven siblings, Ed (Helen), Charles (Lila), Jack (Mildred) and Harry Kilpatrick, Helen (Jake) Mellick, Lorna (Tubby) Howe, and Leona (Harry) Drew.

Casketbearers were Kirk, Kyle and Kevin Simmons, Jeff, Nick, Craig and Brad Schwartzhoff, and Diane Thier.
