Freda Grimstad
Freda Grimstad, age 89, passed away Wednesday, September 20, 2006, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon, Iowa. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 30, at 10:30 a.m. at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church, Waterville, Iowa, with internment of ashes immediately following in the church cemetery. Pastor Ken Kimball will officiate. It was Freda's wish that all memorials go to Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church.
Freda was born December 29, 1916, in Ossian, Iowa. When she reached working age, she moved to Chicago and pursued a career as a secretary and bookkeeper, working at United Standard Products Distribution Center most of her working years. In the '70s, she relocated to Decatur, Illinois, and once again was employed as an office worker, this time for Grimstad Heating & Air Conditioning, a company owned by her brother Elmer. After retirement, Freda moved back to Iowa, residing in Harpers Ferry and then Waukon.
A member of Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church, Freda was dedicated to and found great joy in serving as a scripture reader at Sunday services, being a communion helper, delivering communion to shut-ins, serving as a deacon, participating in programs and activities involving church women, sewing quilts for needy recipients, and being an active member of the Naomi Circle.
Embracing each day as a gift from God, Freda leaves a legacy of service, humility, happiness, humor, and love for family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Tomina Grimstad; five sisters, Clara Yohe, Edna Koranda, Blanche Brookens, Grace Reno, and Bernie Furry; and three brothers, Harold, Elmer, and Norman. She is survived by two sisters, Nora Stamper of Waukon and Bunny Williams of Bremmerton, Wash., and many nieces and nephews.
