Charles Louis “Chic” Bahr was born February 2, 1921, on the Ludlow Township, rural Waukon, Iowa, farm of his parents, Albert and Margaret (Helming) Bahr. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ, attended Ludlow No. 1 rural school and graduated from Waukon High School in 1939.

November 24, 1944, he married Helen Anna Miller at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa. Chic and Helen farmed the Bahr home place, operating a Holstein dairy herd and raising hogs, chickens, and crops for many years. In 1971 they moved to Waukon where they worked as caretakers at Oakland Cemetery and the Waukon City Park. Chic also spent several years working at Wedeking Surge in Waukon.

Chic was a lifelong member of Zion UCC where he served on the council and various other committees throughout the years. He was also an honorary lifetime member of the Lions Club and formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Waukon Cooperative Creamery.

People were very important to Chic. He spent as much time as possible with his family and enjoyed following their activities. He also loved visiting with friends and making new ones whenever he got the chance. He and Helen enjoyed many activities together. In younger years they were in a neighborhood card club and liked to go dancing, especially to polka music. They also did a lot of bowling, each traveling to a number of tournaments throughout the state. Chic also liked to golf and enjoyed fishing on the Mississippi River and took several trips to Canada.
