From the Postville Iowa newspaper:

Henry M. Knodt died in St. Paul Sunday

The people of Postville and vicinity were shocked and grieved last Sunday when the telegraph conveyed to relatives in this city the sorry news of the death in a St. Paul hospital that day of Henry M. Knodt, a former widely known and well liked resident and businessman of Postville, at the age of 67 years, six months and 14 days.

He was born in Guttenberg, Iowa, May 15, 1858, a son of Carl and Margaret Knodt. He was baptized in the Lutheran church at Guttenberg. A year later his parents moved to a farm near Clayton Center, where they resided until 1866 when they became residents of Grand Meadow Township. He was educated in the common and parochial school of this place and professed his faith in Jesus according to the tenets of St. Paul's Lutheran church in the rite of Confirmation on Easter Sunday, 1875, being a member of the first class that was confirmed in the old church. He remained true to the baptismal vows made in infancy and renewed in Confirmation, true to St. Paul's Lutheran church.

In the spring of 1881 he was united in matrimony with Miss Marie Eggert, who passed away Nov. 13, 1898, leaving two daughters, Louise (now Mrs. Henry Oldag) and Alma (now Mrs. Lorence Welzel) and one son, Edmond, residing at Coates, Minn.

January 1, 1900 he entered the bond of holy matrimony with Miss Caroline Bareis, which union was blessed with three daughters, namely, Margaret, Theresa (now Mrs. Henry Heidenreick) and Laura. They continued to reside in this locality until March 1909, when they moved to a farm in the vicinity of Perham, Minn., where they labored until 1915 when they retired to St. Paul.

For 36 years the deceased was a member of St. Paul's church and even when they left our territory he still remained true to the faith of the fathers. Thus last Sunday at one o'clock while still confined to the hospital, he welcomed with the joy the moment which was to reunite him those who had preceded him (which also include a brother and a sister.)

He is mourned by his beloved wife Caroline, one son Edmund Knodt of Rich Valley, Minn, and 5 daughters, Mrs. Henry Oldag of Luana, Mrs. Lorence Welzel of this city Mrs. H. Heidenriech of St. Paul and Laura and Margaret who are still at home; also 2 grandsons and 3 granddaughters, one sister, Mrs. John Casten of Postville and three brothers, John Nurnberger, Pittsburgh, P, and Charles of Hartford, So. Dak., and a host of friends.

The above is in brief the life story of an honest and upright man and citizen, a congenial friend and good neighbor, whose death will be mourned by all who came within the circle of his acquaintance.

Fraternally he was affiliated with the Masonic lodge of Clermont.

The body was brought to Postville on Tuesday night and on Wednesday afternoon funeral services were held from St. Paul's Lutheran Church in this city, Rev. E.T. Finck conducting the service. Interment in the Postville cemetery.
