Anna M. Mathis, 83, of Waukon, Iowa, died Saturday, June 24, 2006, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 27, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider and Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph’s at Paint Rock Cemetery, rural Harpers Ferry, Iowa. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.
Anna Marie Troendle Mathis was born July 11, 1922, on the rural Lansing, Iowa, farm of her parents, George and Frances (Rettinger) Troendle. She was baptized and confirmed at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing. Ann attended Faegre Prairie country school in rural Lansing.
June 11, 1941, she married Delbert Joseph “Bud” Mathis at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing. They farmed together in rural Lansing for many years, operating a dairy farm and raising registered Black Angus cattle, hogs, and grain. Ann was involved with all aspects of the farming operation. She also raised chickens and had a large garden which she was very proud of. In 1986, Ann and Bud retired and moved to Waukon.
Ann was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and a former member of St. Joseph’s at Paint Rock Catholic Church. She enjoyed playing cards, fishing, embroidering, listening to music, dancing, and playing the piano, which she taught herself to play. Ann’s favorite times were spent cooking, baking, and with family and friends.
Survivors include five sons, Cletus (Karen) and Daniel (Kathy), both of Waukon, Earl (Gail) of Robins, Iowa, Cyril (Shirley) of Buffalo City, Wis., and John of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Eloise (Glen) Reed of Lansing and Mary (Daren) Kaeppel of West Union, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Cornelius “Nig” (Lucille) Troendle of Lansing; and three sisters-in-law, Gladys Troendle, Minnie Troendle, and Rita Troendle, all of Lansing.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Delbert “Bud” who died January 1, 2005; a grandson, Jason Kaeppel; twin granddaughters; five brothers, Silas, Harold, Carl, Ted, and Richard Troendle; and two sisters, Louise Sweeney and Theresa Drake.
Honorary casketbearers were her granddaughters, Jenny Durham, Sara Mathis, Michele Pansegrau, Kim Schenck, Kristy Reed, and Jessica Mathis. Casketbearers were her grandsons, Jim, Mike, Vaughn, Eric, and Jared Mathis, David Reed, and Brian and Chad Kaeppel.
