Mrs. DeWitt’s Funeral is to be on Friday

Mrs. Mabel Catherine DeWitt, who had been in poor health for some time died at the Waukon Veterans Memorial hospital on Tuesday. Her funeral will be held Friday Afternoon, April 26 at 1:30 at Martin’s funeral lhome and at 2 at the First Presbyterian church. The Rev. Mr. William Tjaden will officiate and burial will be in Oakland cemetery.

An Allamakee county resident all her life, Mrs. DeWitt was born June 23, 1873, in Makee township, daughter of Elizabeth M. Lane and Charles Jones. She married at Waterloo, July 1, 1895 to C. C. DeWitt, who preceded her in death. Waukon had been her home for the past 39 years.

Remaining are the following children: Mrs. A. W. (Cynthia) Haak, Flora, Ill.; Mrs. John Donahue (Jennie) Burlington; Carlton E. DeWitt, Berkeley, Calif.; Dwight DeWitt, Postville and Marion, Waukon. A great granddaughter, Betty Ness, has been reared in the home of Mrs. DeWitt. There are 15 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

Bothers who remain are Lewis Jones of Waukon and Arthur Jones of Forest Mills.

Mrs. DeWitt attended the local schools and Iowa State college at Cedar Fall. She was interested in flowers and also in poetry, and had written a privately printed volume of verse she had shared with her friends in recent years.
