Rev. Vernon Huffey, age 88, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Monday, March 27, 2006, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake. Funeral services were held Friday, March 31, at Faith United Assembly of God, Storm Lake, with Rev. Jerry Greenwalt and Rev. Paul Sandgren officiating. Interment with full military rites by the VFW Post 6172 was in Storm Lake Cemetery. Sliefert Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Vernon L. Huffey was born September 9, 1917, in Postville, Iowa, to Walter A. and Tilda B. (Olson) Huffey. He lived with his parents in both Postville and Waterville, Iowa. Vernon attended Dalby Country School in Allamakee County, then Waterville High School from 1931 to 1932, graduating in 1935 from Decorah High School in Decorah. Following high school, Vernon attended Central Bible College in Springfield, Mo., in 1938 and North Central Bible College in Minneapolis, Minn., from 1938 to 1940, where he graduated after completing a three-year course in two and a half years. In 1953, Vernon received his BA degree from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, graduating Cum Laude. He continued his graduate studies at Drake University in Des Moines from 1953 to 1954.

March 31, 1941, Vernon was united in marriage to Marian E. Lepa at the Assembly of God Church in Decorah. To this union, two children were born, La Don and Paul.

Vernon was an active member of many Assembly of God churches over the years. He was Presbyter, 30 years, Iowa District of the Assemblies of God, comprehensive oversight of Assembly of God Churches in Sections 1, 2, and 3 comprising all of northern Iowa. He was a member of nine member Board of Directors, administering church business in Iowa and northern Missouri. In addition, Vernon served 30 years on the Credentials Committee examining clergymen to receive license to preach and ordination.

After entering the service on June 13, 1945, Vernon served as chaplain in the US Army, crossing the Atlantic and Pacific oceans 36 times. He was honorably discharged March 31, 1948. From 1948 to 1974, Vernon's service continued as he served in the United States Army Ready Reserve. Vernon attained the rank of Colonel in the US Army as well as receiving a World War II Victory Medal and a Meritorious Service Medal.

Over the years, Vernon was a minister for the Assembly of God Churches in Oelwein, Conrad, Waukon, and Storm Lake. He retired from the active ministry in January of 1982. Then, from 1989 to 1997, Vernon was a pastor at Carriage Manor Chapel in Mesa, Ariz.

Additionally, Vernon was very active in the communities he served. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, past-president of the Buena Vista College Alumni Association, and past-president of the Buena Vista College Honor Society.

Vernon loved his family, loved God, and enjoyed the many beauties of the earth in gardening. He was tremendous as a husband, father, grandfather, pastor, and friend. He'll be sorely missed and never replaced.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, La Don R. (Bill) Kallmer of Omaha, Neb.; his son, Paul V. Huffey of Linn Grove, Iowa; two brothers, Vinton E. Huffey of Monrovia, Calif., and George Huffey of Waterville; five sisters, Shirley (Huffey) Brown of Cedar Falls, Greta (Huffey) Lockhart of Brownsville, Minn., Leatrice (Huffey) McEvilly of Caledonia, Minn., Esther (Huffey) Enyart of Lancaster, Texas, and Lotus (Huffey) Bulman of Caledonia, Minn.; three grandchildren, Tim (Sunny) Kallmer of Austin, Texas, Cherlyn (Brent) Humburg of Omaha, and Christopher Huffey of Archer; and a host of extended family and friends.

Preceding Vernon in death are his father and mother, Walter A. and Tilda B. (Olson) Huffey; a brother, Lloyd Huffey; a sister, Merle (Huffey) Schultz; and his wife, Marian E. Huffey.

Honorary casketbearers were Rev. Vinton Huffey, George Huffey, Rev. Bernard Reece, Russell Bayse, Rich Christensen, Roger Lepa, Keith Wadkins, Marvin Bach, Gary Murray, and Christopher Huffey. Casketbearers were Cherlyn Humburg, Al Swartzentuber, Barton Bulman, Bob Schossow, Brent Humburg, Doug Oehler, Tim Kallmer, and Keith Biggins.
