Norma Kruger
Norma R. Kruger, 86, of Lansing, Iowa, formerly of Waukon, Iowa, died Monday, March 27, 2006, at Thornton Manor Care Center in Lansing. Funeral services were held Thursday, March 30 at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in rural Postville, Iowa, with Rev. Gary Catterson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.
Norma Ruth was born May 6, 1919, on the Ludlow Township, Allamakee County, Iowa, farm of her parents, Paul and Elsie (Klein) Shafer. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, where she remained a lifelong member. She attended rural Ludlow schools through the eighth grade, and later, in her 50s continued on to get her GED.
Norma married Reuben Arthur Kruger June 26, 1938, in Winona, Minn. The two farmed together in Ludlow for many years, operating a dairy herd and raising crops along with beef cattle, hogs, chickens, and an assortment of other animals. Norma took an active roll in all the farm work and enjoyed the country life. In addition to farming, she also worked at Northern Engraving in Waukon and as a homemaker and housekeeper for area families as well as through the local home health care agency. From 1988 until November of 2005 she also worked in the kitchen for her granddaughters at Milty’s restaurant in Lansing. Norma continued living on the farm until 1997 when she moved to Lansing to be closer to her daughter Karen and her family.
Norma liked to travel and took a trip to Hawaii with Karen as well as several bus trips with her friends. She also enjoyed going for Sunday drives through the local countryside. She was a member of Lansing Senior Citizens and whether with friends or family, always enjoyed a game of euchre. Family was a passion for Norma and she loved both caring for and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her three grandchildren, Dawn (Jake) Zeimet, Deneen Milton, and Steve Ewing, all of Lansing; and ten great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Reuben, who died in 1978; a daughter, Karen; a son, James; and a brother, Elmer Shafer.
Casketbearers were Dean Reiser, Josh Koch, Jacob Milton, Steve Ewing, Jake Zeimet, and Wayne Fish.
