Raymond Troendle

Raymond F. Troendle, age 80, retired USDA compliance officer, passed away late Sunday afternoon, March 19, 2006, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon after suffering a heart attack. He had courageously battled with congestive heart failure and disabilities caused by a stroke for several years.

Ray was born in Allamakee County to Ben and Gertrude (Haas) Troendle in 1925. He was educated at the old Rock School on Highway 9. Ray enlisted in the US Army when World War II broke out and served two tours of duty in Europe. He attained the rank of Sergeant in the Combat Engineers and was discharged at Fort Dix, N.J., in 1946.

Ray worked primarily on road construction until joining the USDA in 1959, where he worked in various capacities and on special task force assignments throughout Iowa and the US. He also worked and lived in several Iowa communities including Guthrie Center, Harlan, and Forest City.

He retired to his primary residence in Churchtown in 1989. He enjoyed most the time he spent working around his acreage with Izzy, his dog, at his side, fishing with his grandsons, helping his son restore antiques, and meeting for coffee at the City Club with friend Billy and the gang. He will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Ray was a member of the VFW, NARFE, the American Legion, and a lifelong Democrat.

He is survived by his wife Marjorie; his sons, Richard and Randy; three grandchildren, Nathan, Nick, and Cathy; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Walter of Knoxville, Iowa.

Services were held Wednesday, March 22, at Lycurgus Catholic Church with burial at St. Mary's. Father Knipper officiated.

Casketbearers were his grandsons, Nick and Nate Troendle, his nephew David Troendle, neighbor Tom Scholtes, coworker Jim Carter, and grandson-in-law Clint Ludeking. Honorary pallbearers were Billy Roe, Robert Larson, Austin Troendle, Greg Theile, Austin Ludeking, and Allen Ludeking.
