Sarah (Zara) Frances Ewing, 85, of Waterloo, formerly of Waukon, died Thursday, March 14, 2002, at Parkview Nursing Center in Waterloo after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 16, at 1:30 p.m. at Forest Mills United Methodist Church in rural Postville, Iowa. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of service at the church on Saturday.

Sarah (Zara) Frances Ewing, 85, of Waterloo, formerly of Waukon, died Thurs., March 14, 2002, at Parkview Nursing Center in Waterloo, following a lengthy illness.
Funeral services were held Sat., March 16, at 1:30 p.m. at Forest Mills United Methodist Church in rural Postville, with the Reverend David Schafer officiating. Burial followed in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
Sarah (Zara) Frances Ewing was born May 30, 1916, in rural Vinton, the daughter of Hugh Floyd and Delia (Solt) Gillespie. She attended rural elementary schools, Vinton High School, and graduated from Teachers College Campus High School, now known as Price Lab High School, in Cedar Falls, in 1934. She attended Iowa State Teachers College, now known as the University of Northern Iowa, in Cedar Falls, where she received a degree in Home Economics in 1940. Frances taught school in Beebeetown, Clarksville, and Central City. She then attended the Allen Memorial School of Nursing in Waterloo and became a registered nurse in 1951.
On August 2, 1951, Frances married Charles J. Ewing at Forest Mills United Methodist Church in rural Postville. They lived in Waterloo, where she worked at Allen Memorial Hospital and also Rainbow Meats, a business Charles operated. Later they moved to Waukon, and then to several places in the eastern U.S., where Charles was in the meat business and Frances worked at numerous hospitals.
After some time, the couple returned to Allamakee County, where they operated the Harpers Ferry Grocery and Lansing Standard Oil. After Charles' death in 1984, Frances moved to rural LaPorte City where she lived until moving to the Keystone Nursing Home in 1998. Since 1999, Frances has been a resident of Parkview Nursing Center in Waterloo.
Frances was a member of Forest Mills United Methodist Church and the Blackhawk Button Club in Waterloo. She enjoyed the company of several pet dogs and loved to travel, visiting Mexico, Alaska, and Hawaii.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles; sister, Helen Stocker McCandless; and brothers-in-law, Willis, Arthur, and Harry Ewing.
Survivors include a niece, Sharalyne (Ronald) Albright of Vinton, and their children, Steven, Lowell, and Sharon Albright and Rondalyn Gram; and brothers- and sisters-in-law, Kenneth (Marge) Ewing and Ruth (Keith) Bloxham of Waukon, Keith (Joan) Ewing of Corvallis, OR, Helen "Tiny" May of Dallas, TX, and Neil Ewing of Waterloo.
Honorary casketbearers were Keith and Chuck Bloxham, Roger Vickery, Kenneth, Jerry, Mark, Keith, Donald, Ray, and Tim Ewing, and John and Jim May. Casketbearers were Ronald, Steven, and Lowell Albright, Spencer Gram, Charles Mumm, and William Mumm.
