Mildred Doubek

Mildred E. Doubek, 87, of Waukon, Iowa, died Wednesday, February 15, 2006, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 18, at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Rev. Richard N. Eick officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

Mildred Eleanor was born July 21, 1918, on the Ludlow Township, rural Postville, Iowa, farm of her parents, Gustav and Selma M. (Klein) Shafer. She grew up in Ludlow and was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church. She attended Ludlow No. 8 rural school.

February 24, 1943, she married Raymond F. Doubek at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They moved to Waukon where Mildred was a dedicated mother and homemaker. She routinely raised a big garden of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. She canned much of her produce, along with meats of several varieties. Mildred was an excellent cook, and with Ray being an avid hunter and fisherman, she became an expert at preparing wild game.

Mildred was a member of First Presbyterian Church and its ladies organizations and seldom missed her daily Bible reading. She enjoyed visiting with friends and coffee times with her neighbors. She loved animals of all kinds, but was particularly close to her cat, Tiger. Her family was her greatest pleasure and whenever possible, Mildred made sure the whole family was involved in activities, from spending time around the house to accompanying Ray on his fishing and trapping outings.

Survivors include three daughters, Darlene Doubek, Diane (Randy) Sweeney, and Donna (Mick) Eberhart, all of Waukon; eight grandchildren, Tammy, Stacey, and Kevin Jostand, Melissa Bechtel, Trisha Wilkins, Ashley Sweeney, Michelle Eberhart, and Lisa Curtin; and eight great-grandchildren, Johnathan, Tyler, Brenden, Abi, Alexandra, Abby, Madeline, and Maycie.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Raymond, who died in 1987; and a brother, Ralph Shafer.

Casketbearers were Lyle, Dennis, and Dale Shafer, Mike Bechtel, Chad Wilkins, and Trampes Curtin. Her grandchildren were honorary casketbearers.
