WAUKON, Iowa-- Tillie Beneke, 89, of Waukon, died Sunday, Jan. 8, 2006 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse. Funeral services will be 11a.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, at St. John's Wheatland United Church of Christ in rural New Albin, Iowa, with the Rev. Paul Burgess officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Tillie Viola Beneke was born Aug. 9, 1916 in Cashton, Wis., the daughter of Frank and Lucy (Winchel) Schallock. After attending rural Cashton schools, Tillie stayed on the farm to help her father and brother until 1943, when she moved to LaCrosse, and worked for the telephone company. On Aug. 17, 1946, she married Henry William Beneke at Wesleyan Methodist Church in LaCrosse. The two farmed together in the Sleepy Hollow area of rural New Albin on Henry's home farm. In addition to running the household, Tillie was involved in all aspects of the operation, from chores to field work. In 1972, the couple moved to New Albin, where they operated Ma & Pa Beneke's Cafe for five years. They moved to LaCrosse in 1976, and Tillie went to work for Northern Engraving, commuting to their Holmen plant for 12 years. In 1995 they moved to Waukon, where Tillie lived until moving to Lansing, Iowa, in August 2004.
Tillie spent her whole life being active. While living on the farm. Tillie was a member of St. John's Wheatland UCC and a neighborhood homemakers group. After moving to LaCrosse, she became involved with activities at Trinity United Church of Christ. She was talented in all aspects of needlework, including tatting, crochet, embroidery and sewing. On the farm, she raised a big garden of vegetables and floweres and developed a lifelong love of cats. Tillie also had an adverturesome flair, never passing up the chance for a new experience or to take a ride on a boat, plane or amusement park attraction. Her delightful sense of humor and humble nature made her many friends, but the most precious times she had were spent with her family.
Survivors include her four children, Karen (Jeff) Lampert of Brownsville, Minn. Loren (Lois) Beneke of Waukon, Arne (Janet) Beneke of New Albin and Arlyn (Marge) Beneke of Durham, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Amy (Adrian) Evans, Jake (Shashawna), Jason (Rhonda) and Melissa Beneke, Emily Freiler, Shannon (Cory) Klug and Lindsey, Kelsey and Haley Lampert; and five great-grandchildren, Zayna and Zoey Evans, Nathan and Jillian Beneke and Connor Klug. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry who died in 2002; two brothers, Louis and Vernon "Bob" Schallock; and two sisters, Lula Koenig and Clara Tucker
