Fred Goeke was born in Germany Aug. 29, 1830 and died at Crystal Lake, Iowa, Feb. 25, 1923, and was therefore 92 years, 5 months and 27 days old. He came with his parents to America in 1848. They settled near Sheboygan, Wis., and removed some time after to Manitowoc.
At the latter place he was united with Olga Eevenson in marriage. They came to Iowa in 1863 and settled near Waukon, afterward moving to town and living here until March 19, 1915, when they went to live with their daughter at Crystal Lake.
July 1, 1917, Mrs. Goeke passed to the Better Land.
To the above union there came twelve children, eight of whom live to mourn both father and mother. The survivors are Mrs. Fred Requard, Clermont, Ia.; Fred and Herman Goeke of Waukon; Mrs. W.R. King, Crystal Lake, Ia.; Charles, Kewaunee, Ill.; David of Davenport, Ia.; Mrs. S.H. Becker, New Ulm, Minn., and Tim of Waukon.
He also leaves a brother and siter, C. Goeke and Mrs. J. Reynolds, Waukon.
Mr. Goeke was long a member of Zalmona Presbyterian church in Ludlow township. He was a man of strict integrity and uprightness and was respected by all who knew him. Before he died he represented five generations, for he was father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather many time over.
Notwithstanding the bad condition of the roads many of the old neighbors and friends gathered at Zalmona church Friday afternoon and paid honorable respect to his memory. The pastor, Rev. Zisler, being sick, Rev. Ganar of China, being in the neighborhood, conducted the service in the German language and Rev. Van Nice in English.
The family and friends wish to extend their thanks to all for kindness shown in their bereavement.
