Fred Guehse [sic], a farmer in Post township, about six miles north of Postville, committed suicide Tuesday on his farm by hanging himself with his suspenders to a tree Guehse, who is 63 years old and owns about 800 acres of land in post and Ludlow townships, left Thursday August 25, for a pleasure trip to California. On the home journey he tried to commit suicide on the train by cutting his throat and was taken off the train at Green River, Wy., and after medical care, given into the custody of the sheriff.
The family was notified at once and agreed that Louis Schutte of Postville, a friend of the family, should bring him home. He returned with him Monday morning and delivered him to his family. Monday night, however, the wife awakened and discovered that he was ready to leave the bedroom. She tried to hold him, but he jumped through the window screen and disappeared in the woodlands of his large farm.
A searching party of neighbors started at once for the man, and bloodhounds from Waterloo were also set in action, but they could not get the right trail. Finally a neighbor, Paul Schaefer, found the man hanging from a tree.
Fred Guehse leaves a widow, two daughters and one son.
