CRAWFORD, NEWELL, ALLENSON, STEELE, BARNARD, EATON

Waukon, Iowa - Mrs. J.C. Crawford, lifelong resident of Waukon, died Tuesday at her home here. Although she had been in poor health the past few months at times, yet her illness reached a critical condition only a week or so ago. Death was due to a complication of diseases.

Flora Elizabeth Newell, daughter of Charles and Mary Newell, was born in Waukon, October 7, 1856. She became a member of the First Baptist church in Waukon, April 2, 1876. She was a member of the first class ever graduated from the Waukon High school and taught in that and other schools of the county.

She was married September 2, 1882, to Dr. John C. Crawford, who survives her.

Three children were born to this union, who survive, namely: Captain Nathan N. Crawford of the regular army, who was being transferred from Fort Robinson, Neb., to Camp Grant Ill. when he received word of his mother's illness, and he reached here just a few hours after her death; Mrs. E.A. Allenson of Waukon, and Mrs. Caryl Steele of Carroll, Iowa. Also four grandchildren.

Six brothers and sisters also survive: Mrs. F.C. Barnard of this city; Edward Newell of Dubuque, Dell Newell of Hoquiam, Wash., Mrs. David Eaton of Cresco, Iowa, and Ben and Miss Mary Newell of Waukon.

Funeral services were held Thursday from the house, conducted by Rev. R.L. Van Nice, with interment in Oakland cemetery.
