"In the midst of life we are surrounded by death." "There is but one step between me and death." How truthful these sayings are, is again demonstrated in the accident and death of the departed. The community was shocked when it heard of the accident and death of Mr. Saewert on last Saturday evening.

The departed was walking home from the neighbors where he had visited, and on his way home was struck by a passing automobile driven by Miss Marcella Halvorson, who is said to have done her best to avoid the accident then Charley walked into the car instead of stepping off the pavement.

Unconscious from the effects he was brought to Lansing and from thence to the St. Francis Hospital, La Crosse, Wis., where on the following day, August 21st, at 8:55 P.M., he passed away at the age of 65 years 11 months and 21 days.

Charles August Saewert was born August 30, 1866, in Brandenburg, Germany. He came in his early life to this country and settled in Allamakee county.

He was married to Magdalena Bechtel on the 12th of June, 1893. This union was blessed with two children, Carl Saewert and Mrs. Lydia Johnson, both of Church, Iowa.

Mr. Saewert was married the second time to Mrs. Magdalena Roth Bechtel on September 26, 1899. To this union three children were born: Mrs. Marie Zimmerman of Church, Iowa; William Saewert, of Minneapolis, Minn.; and Harry Saewert of Church, Iowa.

He also leaves to mourn Mrs. Edna Schleith of Minneapolis, Minn.; Edwin and Freeman Bechtel of Church, Iowa; also four sisters, Mrs. Minnie Fails of Firesteel, S.D.; Mrs. Henrietta Rueggenmeier of Waukon; Mrs. Carolina Kent and Mrs. Mary Stadsvold, of Waukon; many other relatives and friends.

The deceased was a member of the Congregational church at Church, Iowa, from where the funeral was held this afternoon, Rev. H.J. Noeding of Lansing officiating.
