Farmer Killed in Crash

A Waukon man died Friday morning in a one-car rollover as he headed home to his Allamakee County farm.

Jeffrey Berns, 29, was driving north on Highway 76 when, at 12:40 a.m., he lost control on a curve, went into the shoulder and struck a field driveway, according to the Allamakee County Sheriff's Department. His car then rolled several times, coming to rest on it's top.

Berns, the lone occupant, was taken to Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, where he was pronouced dead. The accident happened 2 1/2 miles north of Waukon.

Berns farmed with his father, Francis Berns. When he wasn't farming, he was most likely riding a snowmobile or motorcycle, said his mother, Lisa (?) Berns of Waukon. Berns also enjoyed truck pulls and playing pool.

"He was a good guy; he loved everybody," she said. "He had a lot of friends. He couldn't be here today to see the steady flow of friends that have been here since 5 a.m."

Arrangements for Berns are pending at Hanson's in Waukon

Jeff P. Berns, 29, died Friday, Dec. 13, 1996, at Veterans Memorial Hospital after an auto accident. Services: 11a.m. Monday, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hanover. Burial: church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Hanson Funeral Home, where a rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. and a scripture service will be held at 7:30.
Survivors include his parents, Mary and Francis Berns; two sisters, Tracy Schlitter and Shelly Grangaard, both of Waukon; and four brothers, Jerry, Greg, and Doug, all of Waukon, and Reggie of Spring Grove, Minn.
