Mary A. Mauss, 81, of Waukon, died Mon., May 7, 2001, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a sudden illness.

Funeral services were held Fri., May 11, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.

Mary Agatha Zoll Mauss was born Feb. 28, 1920, on the French Creek Township farm of her parents, Joseph and Hazel (Kelleher) Zoll. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Hanover Catholic Church and attended rural area schools.

On Oct. 15, 1940, she married Mark Mauss at St. Mary's Hanover Catholic Church. The couple resided in Akron, Oh, from 1942-46 before returning to Waukon, where they have lived since. Mary was an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic church, the Rosary Society, and the Little Flower Study Club. She was also a member of the Good Samaritan Center Care Review Board. Mary enjoyed playing bridge, cross stitching, and traveling, especially to Texas, where she and Mark spent several winters. Mary was a welcoming hostess, a good cook and baker, and a loyal supporter of community events.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, James and Vivian "Butch" Zoll; a sister, Myrt Larson; a step-brother, Donald Whalen; and a step-sister, Julie Whalen.

Survivors include her husband, Mark, of Waukon; a daughter, Carol (Bill) Heffron of Bloomington, Mn; three sons, Tom (Karol) of Gig Harbor, Wa., Bill (Darlene) of Dubuque, and Tim (Sue) of Tacoma, Wa; seven grandchildren; three step-sisters, Anna Mae (Bob) Curtin and Dorothy Davis, both of Waukon, and Delores (Bill) McDowell of Cedar Rapids; and three step-brothers, Dan Whalen of Eugene, Or., Emmett (Lee) Whalen of Elkader, and Jim (Bess) Whalen of Augusta, Wi.

Casketbearers were her grandchildren, Molly and Mark Heffron, and Shelley, Michael, Zachary, Benjamin, and Brandon Mauss.

Honorary casketbearers were the members of the St. Theresa of The Little Flower Study Club.

Martin Funeral Home of Waukon assisted the family.
