Mabel Meyer
Mabel Elizabeth Meyer, daughter of Henry John and Caroline Elizabeth (Ziegler) Wilke, was born March 3, 1898 on a farm in Post Township, Allamakee County, Iowa. She died Sunday, April 9, 1995 in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. She was 97 years old.
She was baptized in 1898 at St. Paul Lutheran Church and confirmed there in 1913. Mabel attended the Empire and Woodland Schools which were located north of Postville.
On August 21, 1924 she was married to Walter J. Meyer by the Reverend E. Schmidt. The couple lived in Postville where Walter worked as a carpenter.
Mabel was active in the community. She sang in the church choir for many years. She was a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post No. 9125 and of the World War I Auxiliary Post No. 1297 of Allamakee County and a past president. She had also been a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Postville, the Senior Citizens Club and a life member of the Postville Historical Society. Mabel had served as Superintendent of the flower department of the Big Four Fair for over 40 years. She was also a volunteer at the Allamakee County Care Facility at Waukon for over 30 years.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Walter who died in 1967 and a brother Wilbert Wilke and his wife Anna Wilke.
Surviving are her niece, Geneva Rice of Waukon and grand nephew, Donald Rice and wife Mary of Moorhead, Minnesota; two great great nieces, Anna Kathleen Rice and Sarah Michelle Rice, both of Moorhead, Minn; three sisters-in-law, Maxine Meyer and Esther Meyer, both of Postville, and Amy Meyer of Huxley, Iowa and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 12, 1995 in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. The Reverend Charles W. Miller officiated. The organist was Joann Martins and the soloist was Sandie Helgerson. Casket bearers were Richard Meyer, Stanley Schroeder, William Livingood, Harold Mohrs, Emil Schultz, Jr. and Bernold Monroe. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery.
