John E. Rothermel, 81 Prairie du Chien, passed away at a local hospital, Thursday, March 8. Funeral services were held at Lake Brothers funeral home, the Rev. W. K. Bodamer officiating and interment was in the Prairie du Chien cemetery.
Deceased was born Jan. 13, near Lansing, Iowa and lived on the farm with his parents until he was 21 when he went to Dorchester, Iowa where he learned the blacksmith trade. He was married to Ada Dennison of Waukon, on Jan. 27, 1902. They lived in several communities where he worked at his trade.
They returned to Prairie du Chien in 1917 and he opened a blacksmith shop which he operated until ill health necessitated his retirement. His wife passed away in 1949 and he continued to live alone until 1949 when he went to the nursing home of Mrs. Minnie Parrish.
He was a kindly person and their home was open to anyone in need. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Ole M. Osness (sp), Lansing, Iowa and Mrs. Alfred L. Simensen, Waukon. His wife, parents, and three sisters, preceded him in death.
