Gilbert Meyer

Funeral services for Gilbert Meyer were held Monday, July 7 at 10:30 a.m., at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. Rev. Julius L. Peterson and Rev. David E. Palm officiated. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Gilbert Henry Meyer, son of William H. and Minnie (Ehde) Meyer, was born June 28, 1910 in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County. He died July 3, 1986 in Community Memorial Hospital, Postville.

He was baptized July 31, 1910 and confirmed August 16, 1925. He attended the Woodland Country School.

On June 24, 1936 he was married to Esther Emma Block at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, by the Rev. R. B. Garten. They had 4 daughters.

They farmed in Henderson Prairie Township from 1936 until 1949. They moved to Postville in 1949 where he was employed as a mechanic and on road maintenance for the Iowa State Highway Commission. In 1975 Gilbert retired.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Jeffrey Lynn Nelson, three brothers, Walter, Harvey and Lloyd and two sisters, Mrs. Richard (Alma) Ihde and Mrs. Cloy (Clara) Miller.

Surviving are his wife, Esther, four daughters, Marilyn (Mrs. Henry Nelson), Oelwein, Dorothy (Mrs. Charles Fett), Lake Villa, IL, Gretchen (Mrs. Roger Boleyn), Elgin and Dianne (Mrs. Dennis Westendorf), Waverly, 11 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and a sister, Aileen Sander, Postville.

Casket bearers were Randall Nelson, Gregory Nelson, C. Cedric Fett, Michael Boleyn, Steven Boleyn and Bernell Sander.

Honorary casket bearers were Daniel Westendorf and Darren Westendorf.
