OBITUARY

Patrick Kielty was born in County Mayo, Ireland, in May 1817 and died at his home in Monona Tuesday, September 10, 1907, at the age of 90 years and 4 months.

In 1852, Mr. Kielty came to America, landing in New Orleans, moving from there to Virginia a short time later. In 1855, he came to Iowa taking up a homestead on Pleasant Ridge, where he resided until 1876 when he moved to the farm in Fairview township, Allamakee County, which has since been the family home until a few months before his death.

In 1852, in Virginia, he was united in marriage to Miss Katherine Geraghty, and together they have journeyed down life’s pathway, far beyond the age limit. Being among Clayton County’s earliest pioneers, they have stood side by side, meeting the hardships of the early days with the same degree of patience and perseverance that characterized our ancestors of the days when Iowa was in its infancy.

To this union were born nine children: 5 sons and 4 daughters. Three daughters Katherine, Mary, and Anna (Mrs. M. E. Grady) and one son having preceded the father to the grave.

Michael and James of Rockwell, Richard and John of Monona, and Mrs. J. H. McCarthy of Woodville, Wisconsin, are left with their aged mother to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father.

Mr. Kielty was a man of sterling character, honest and upright in his dealings with mankind and ever ready to extend aid and assistance whenever called upon. In his earlier years, he took an active part in the township and county affairs, serving many terms in court as a trial and grand juryman, carrying out his public duty in a manner that made him a marked figure in public circles.

He was a faithful member of the Catholic church and a constant attendant to its religious services. His death was principally due to advanced age. On Monday he visited at the neighbors, being taken sick that evening at 9 o’clock, he passed away the following day at 1:30
p.m., after having received the last rites of the Catholic church. The funeral services were held at St. Patrick’s church, Thursday, September 12, attended by an unusually large number of neighbors and friends. Burial took place in the Catholic cemetery.
