Quite a sad accident happened near the Elon Church, in Center township, on Saturday last. A child, some four or five years old, who was living in the family of Mr. A. Gilbertson (its own parents being both dead) was out in the yard playing, when it was attacked by a furious cow and nearly gored to death before help could reach it.

One of the cow's horns entered the child's neck in front, a little to the right of the center, and tearing through the right side of the neck opened a wound two and a half inches long and an inch deep, and its head and back were severely bruised.

The case was attended to by Dr. Deremo, but medical aid was unavailing, and the child died in a few hours.

_____________

Within hours of my posting this obit, Henry Brainard most certainly ID'ed the little child as Knud Grefstad. Knud was buried in Old West Paint Creek cemetery on 2/11/1874 (the same day that his death notice was printed in the newspaper).

Although none have an extant gravestone, the 'Woodmansee' cemetery book records them as follows:

Grefstad, Andrea Oline D.; 1865 Jun 23-1869 Aug 11
Grefstad, Daniel Knudsen; 1833 - 1870 Jul 23
Grefstad, Knud; Buried 1874 Feb 11
Grefstad, Oline Olsdatter; 1834 - 1870 Oct 31

--
Henry states: "Andrea would be the little sister. Daniel and Oline both died year after Andrea's death, leaving poor Knud a orphan. The parents only recently coming to America from Norway."
