John Carl Martins

John Carl Martins, 80, died Wednesday, March 27, 1991 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 30, 1991, at the Ossian Lutheran Church with Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating. Organist, Elaine Knutson, special music by the Ossian Quartet accompanied by Irmgaard Ellingson.

Casket bearers were Clarence Brincks, Paul Hageman, Lee Hageman, Robert Henning, John Bushman and Vic Halverson. Burial was at the Postville Cemetery with Ossian Funeral Chapel handling the arrangements.

John was born October 28, 1910, at Lansing, the son of Carl and Ella (Mecklenburg) Martins. He was baptized and confirmed at the Postville Lutheran Church, March 4, 1931, he married Florence M. Topel at Postville. They had one son and three daughters.

Before moving to Ossian in 1947 John was employed in the Postville Creamery.

Survivors include one son, Donald Martins, Rock Island, IL; Marlene Nesvik, Ossian; and Joan Kleppe of Maquoketa; eight grandsons, Rick, Randy and Ronald Nesvik, all of Ossian; Russ Nesvik, Davenport; Gale Dean Kleppe, Stanwood; Gary Kleppe, Maquoketa; two granddaughters, Vicky (Kleppe) McNeil, Preston; Valori Kleppe, Monmouth; and seven great grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Harlen Martins, New Hampton and Leonard Martins, Waterloo; a sister, Dilles Sess, Lansing and a half-sister, Melinda Richman of Overbrook, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Florence in 1980; a daughter, Marjorie in 1934; three brothers, Carl, Harvey and Harley; a sister, Edith, and three half-brothers, Wilbur, Walter and Rudy.
