Nelson Preus, 81 dies; was Lutheran bishop for 12 years

Ex-teacher remembered as fair and ‘consistently compassionate’

Nelson F. Preus, former bishop of the Eastern North Dakota District of the American Lutheran Church (ALC) died of cancer Friday at his home in Fridley. He was 81.

His brother, the Rev. David Preus of Minneapolis, former president of the ALC said he was a
“superb pastor and an outstanding leader in the church. He’s been a great mentor for me, and a great friend. He was generous, good-humored and lively, interested in whatever the earth provided...He was a loyal, compassionate friend not only to me, but a great deal of people"

Nelson Preus, who was born in Beloit, Wis., and grew in Decorah, Iowa, received a bachelor's degree in 1939 from Luther College in Decorah. He received a master's degree in English from the University of Iowa and in the early 1940s and a master's in theology from Luther Seminary in St. Paul in the mid-1940s.

His first pastoral job was in Onawa, Iowa. He later served churches in Waukon, Iowa and Fargo and Grand Forks N.D. In 1972 he was elected bishop of the North Dakota District and served in that position 12 years.

He retired to Fridley in 1985, but continued to serve in eight more interim pastorates until his illness prevented him from continuing.

Before becoming a pastor, he was an English teacher for a year at Dana College in Blair, Neb., and later taught part time at Luther Seminary.

In addition to his brother, Preus is survived by his wife Marilyn of Fridley; a son, Joel of Tours, France; daughters Mary of Minneapolis and Sara Klingberg of Seoul, South Korea; brothers Christian of Laporte, Minn.; Paul of West Yarmouth, Mass., and Ove of Sacramento, Calif., and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at noon Tuesday at the University Lutheran church of Hope, 601 13th Av. SE., Minneapolis.

Pastor Wed in own Church
St John's Lutheran church was the setting for the Aug. 28 wedding of Marilyn Grangaard and Nelson F. Preus, pastor of the church. The 7:30 p.m. vows were read by Dr. A.N. Rogness, Mason City, Ia., who also administered communion.

The bride wore a rose chanilly lace gown over slipper satin and carried a white Bible. Her veil was fingertip length and held by a lace crown. Her sister Mrs. R.E. Nelson, Tacoma, Wash. served as matron of honor and bridesmaids were Rosalie and Lois Grangaard.

Brothers of the bridegroom attended him: Paul G. Preus, Boston, Mass., bestman, and Ove Preus and the Rev David W. Preus, groomsmen. Candlelighters were Orrin Grangaard Jr. and Jonathan Preus, Fergus Falls, Minn.

A reception for 400 was held in the Winneshiek hotel at Decorah. the couple after motoring through northern Minnesota will live in Waukon.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O.H Grangaard and the bridegroom the son of Mrs. O.J.Preus, Decorah, Ia.
