A prominent Clayton County lady passed peacefully away July 8, 1908, death resulting from a stroke of paralysis, following a protracted period of failing health.

The deceased was born in [New] York State, Dec. 29, 1824. She was 83 years, 8 months, and 9 days old at the time of her death.

In 1856 Almira Smith was married to Wm. Frye of Cold Springs, Jefferson county, Wis. In 1882, with her husband and 4 sons, she came to Hardin, where she lived until the time of her death. In 1883 her husband died and since that time death has not invaded the family circle until it took the mother on the afternoon of July 8, 1908.

Her sickness was protracted through about five long years of more or less pain and times of intense suffering. The strong constitution and tenacity to life inherited from her parents, sustained her when many others would have fallen, she bore her pain with little complaint.

The deceased was a member of the U.B. church for many years. Her greatest ambition was to live a true Christian life and those who stood by when the sleep of death came, said that she passed peacefully away.

The body will rest in the family lots in Hardin cemetery. Those who more especially mourn in their bereavement are three sons, William, Edward, Hezekiah, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

After short services in the home the funeral was conducted in the Hardin M.E. church by the Rev. Bonnie of U.B. church at Castalia, Iowa. The choir rendered appropriate hymns and beautiful floral decorations were provided, all of which helped to comfort those who mourn the loss of a kind and loving mother and grand mother.
