John Dougherty, 76, Passed away Monday at home of his daughter here
John Dougherty, long time resident of this city, passed away Monday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. H. Hegeman. Mr Dougherty received serious injuries in an auto accident in Chicago recently and shortly afterward suffered a paralytic stroke. He was brought to Waukon about three weeks ago and had since been cared for at the home of his daughter.
Mr Dougherty was born July 24, 1855, at Philadelphia, Pa. coming to Allamakee county when he was but one year old. This county was his home for the rest of his life except the last fifteen years when he has been engaged in the real estate business in Chicago.
He was married Nov. 6, 1883, to Miss Catherine McGarrity, who preceded him in death six years ago. Three children were born to this union; Emmett F. and Mrs. Hegeman of Waukon, and Mrs. Florence Burns of Los Angeles, California. He is also survived by two brothers and four sisters --- J. J. (James J.) of Park River, N. Dak., Michael of Rossville, Mrs. A. Laughlin and Mrs. Sarah Deeny of Lycurgus, Mrs. H. J. Deeny of Waukon, and Mrs. T. J. Kelleher of Washington, D.C. Eight grandchildren also survive.
Mr. Dougherty was at one time treasurer of Allamakee county for eight years and was engaged in business in Waukon, first in the shoe business and later for seven years in the clothing business in partnership with George J. Helming.
Funeral Services were held Wednesday from St. Patrick's church, with burial in Mount Olivet.
