Harpers Ferry, Ia. - John Clifford Martell, 64, former Harpers Ferry resident, died at a hospital Dec. 30 after a 14-month illness. Funeral services were held at St. Raphael's Cathedral at Dubuque, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Casey officiating at a requiem mass. Burial was at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Martell was born at Harpers Ferry Oct. 26, 1888, son of David and Fanny (Latronche) Martell. He received his education at the Harpers Ferry School, and on Oct. 7, 1913, he was married to Mary McGuire at Harpers Ferry. They moved to Dubuque in 1918 where they operated a rooming house for 29 years.

He was a member of the Holy Name Society and the County Historical Society.

Survivors include his wife, one son, Robert, one granddaughter, one brother, Peter, Harpers Ferry, and four sisters, including Mrs. F.J. Robinson, Mrs. Leonard Melvin, Denison, Tex., and Mrs. George Whitman, Markville, Minn. His parents, one sister and one brother preceded him in death.
