George Leas Funeral Held

Funeral services for George Andrew Leas, 87, were held Sunday afternoon at 3:15 o'clock from the Schultz Funeral home to the Methodist church at 3:30 o'clock with Rev. Roscoe C. Jerrell officiating.

Burial was in the City cemetery.

Mr. Leas died Friday evening, Aug. 16, at 5:30 o'clock at the Postville hospital, from complications of old age. He had been a patient at the hospital for a week, having been in good health up to that time.

He was born a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jeremiah (Henderson) Leas, Nov. 17, 1858, in Linton township, Allamakee county. He spent most of his life on the farm, growing to manhood in the community in which he was born. He was married to Sarah Thias, Jan. 22, 1884. They moved to Monona in 1913.

Mrs. Leas died Dec. 21, 1921. Since that that time Mr. Leas made his home with his children, living for some time with his two sons on the home farm, for five years with his daughter, Mrs. Arnold Mieche, in Oelwein, and for the last seven years with his daughter, Mrs. John Melcher.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Arnold Mieche and Mrs. Mike Rogge of Oelwein and Mrs. John Melcher of Monona; five sons, Wesley of LaCrosse, Wis., Elmie J. of Kennewick, Wash., Harry and Arthur living on the home farm, and Ray of Waterloo; a sister, Mrs. Estella Emerson of Waukon; a brother, J.S.Leas of Kalamazoo, Mich.; 30 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were grandsons and a great-grandson. They were: Noel Melcher, George Leas Jr., Allen Leas, Orville Leas, and George Cowell. The last named was the great-grandson.

All of the children were present for the funeral services, save Elmie. Others present from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Leas and sons, Cecil and Leo of Caledonia, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Herb Graham and Mr. and Mrs. Arlo Graham of Prosper, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Lester Melcher and family of Chicago, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Arden Melcher of LaPorte City; Mr. and Mrs. John Walsh and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hillesheim of Ridgeway; and a number of relatives and friends from Oelwein, Waukon, and Rossville.
