James S. Kopecky, 56, of rural Harpers Ferry, died Friday, June 21, 2002, in his home following a brief illness. Services: 11 a.m. Monday, St. Pius at Cherry Mound Catholic Church, rural Harpers Ferry, by Father Louis Trzil. Burial: Spaulding Cemetery, rural Harpers Ferry, with military rites. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Martin Funeral Home, Waukon.

Military rites by Harpers Ferry American Legion Post 722. A memorial fund will be established.

James Steven Kopecky was born June 21, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, the son of John and Irma Hac Kopecky. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Ludmila Catholic church, attended St. Ludmila Elementary School and was in the first graduating class from LaSalle High School in Cedar Rapids.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1968, with a tour of duty in Berlin, Germany. Following the service he returned to Cedar Rapids, where he worked for Wagner Printers and then Vigortone Ag Products for over 20 years. He retired to the rural Harpers Ferry area, where he worked for Brian Wade Concrete in McGregor.

James was a member of St. Pius at Cherry Mound Catholic Church and Guardians of St. Joseph Branch 137 Catholic Workmen.

He enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting and farming.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John Joseph.

Survivors include four sisters, Judity (Michael) Spinler of Plano, Ill., Elaine (Don) Hensen and Margaret (Douglas) Donald, both of Cedar Rapids, and Mary (Carles) Kopecky Vidal of Barcelona, Spain; a brother, Peter (Angela) Kopecky of Cedar Rapids; 13 nieces and nephews; seven great-nieces and great-nephews; a special friend, Jeannie Waite of Cedar Rapids; and extended family Tom and Beth McCormick and children of Harpers Ferry.
