A special to the 'Atchison Champion' from St. Francis, says:

Edward Kernt, one of the best known and popular business men in north-western Kansas, died suddenly on Monday, at 3 p.m., of apolexy, at the Eagle House at St. Francis. His death came like a shock and has cast a deep gloom such as was never known here.

His many friends all over the west will mourn his loss, for he had those rare qualities of manhood that made and retained friends. As a business man he was a success and had few equals.

Edward Kernt was born Jan. 6, 1864, at Lansing, Allamakee county, Ia., and at his death was 31 years of age. He was a member of the well known grocery firm of Kernt Bros., one of the most popular business houses in western Kansas. His integrity and excellent business ability did much to make the "K Store" famous.

Ten years ago he located at Bird City, Kan. He was at Atwood, Kan., two years and has been at St. Francis for about a year, and has built up a good trade. His brothers, Charles and Gus, members of the firm of Kernt Bros. will continue the business.

~The Goodland Republic and Sherman County Farmer (Goodland, Kansas); September 20, 1895 (Transcribed from a digital copy online at the Library of Congress Chronicling America website)

Note: buried in Oak Hill cemetery, Lansing.
