SIMON HENRY GROTEGUT 1827-1899
At his home in Waukon, May 4, 1899, Simon Henry Grotegut, aged 72 years and 19 days.
He was born in Lippie Detmold, Germany, April 15th, 1827. He was married in the old country. They came to America in 1853 and resided at Cleveland, Wis., and during the war [Civil War] he enlisted and served for a time in Co. D. 52d Wis. Infantry. They afterward moved to Frankville, and about two years ago he moved to town. The funeral was held at the German Reform church in Waukon Sunday morning, the services conducted by pastor Elliker and Rev. Kuntz of the Reform Salem church of Ludlow and his remains laid to rest in the cemetery of the latter church. He leaves a widow and twelve children to mourn his loss. About thirty members of John J. Stillman Post, G. A. R. and other Union veterans were present as an escort from the house to the church and from the church toward the western limit of town, paying the last honor due one who has served his adopted country.
