Mrs. JOHN (Hertha Helen Herman) GROTEGUT
Hertha H. Grotegut, daughter of August Herman and Caroline Minnie Brandt, was born Sept. 21, 1897 in Waukon, Iowa. She died March 27, 1994 at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah. She was 96.
Hertha lived in rural Allamakee and Winneshiek counties all her life, except a short time in Frankville. She attended the rural "Helming" school. She was married April 12, 1917 to John Grotegut at her parents' Union Prairie Township farm.
She liked to garden, sew, patch things, bake, cook and crochet. She liked to get things done and appeared often in a hurry. She was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ. She remained very active until a shoulder injury in 1990, and later a hip problem, slowed her down.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, in 1965; two brothers, Elmer and Lawrence Herman; one sister, Mabel Miller; and two grandsons, Randy and Ronald Lee Hoffman.
Survivors include two daughters, Esther (Mrs. Julian) Hanson and Marie (Mrs. Harold) Hoffman, both of Waukon; two sisters, Dorothea Schuttemeier and Bernice Hagen, both of Waukon; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and sisters-in-law Emma Henning and Lydia Grotegut, both of Waukon.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 30, 1994 at Salem United Church of Christ, Rev. Dr. Elsa Marsland officiating. Burial was in Salem Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Donald J. Hanson, Harold Hoffman, Jr., William Buehler, Marvin, Tim, Michael and Eric Hoffman, and Tim Thomas.
Arrangements were by Martin Funeral Home, Waukon.
