Leonard A. Hammel, a former resident of Postville, passed away at Ouachita General Hospital, Hot Springs, Arkansas, on Sunday, February 17, at the age of 68.

He was born March 2, 1888, the son of John and Caroline Hammel. On November 11, 1909, he was united in marriage with Mary Ellen Clark. To this union were born four children.

Mr. and Mrs. Hammel resided in and around Postville until 10 years ago when poor health forced his retirement. They then moved to Hot Springs.

He was preceded in death by his wife on February 29, 1956 and a son, Hartley, who died in infancy.

Surviving members of the family are two sons: Charles R. and Virgil C., both of Hot Springs; a daughter, Alice (Mrs. Kenneth Hinman) of Davenport; two grandchildren, Mary Jane and John Clark Hammel; two brothers and seven sisters.

During his residence in Hot Springs, he was a member of the Orange Street Presbyterian Church. Mr. Hammel was an active member of the Hot Springs Horse Show Association both as an owner and a trainer.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 19, at 2:00 p.m. from the Gross Chapel, with the Rev. Maynard Miller officiating. He was laid to rest in the Memorial Gardens cemetery.
