Paul G. Hammond was born at Monona, Iowa, February 13, 1897, the son of John and Elizabeth Hammond. He lived at Monona until 13 years of age, when his folks moved to a farm near Postville. There he received his high school education.

Mr. Hammond lived for seven years in Chicago, where he worked as a salesman. He then returned to Postville where his folks were still living.

December 1, 1930 he was united in marriage to Anna Marie Stahr. He then entered into business for himself. He operated a service station until the spring of 1936, when he sold it. He and his wife then moved to Oelwein June 1 of the same year, where they have been in the restaurant business since.

He liked good music and enjoyed singing. For some time he was a member of the Postville band. He was kind of heart and did many favors for people who needed help.

Death came to him suddenly on May 7, 1950 at the age of 53. Besides his wife he is survived by four stepchildren: Laurance Stahr of West Union, George and Tommy Stahr of Oelwein, and Mrs. Leo Durnan of Wadena; one sister, Mrs. Elmer Eberling of Castalia, one brother, Charles of West Union, and a large host of friends and relatives by whom he will long be remembered.

Funeral services were held at the Hintz Funeral Home at Oelwein May 10, 1950 with R. LaVerne Ervin, pastor of the First Church of Christ in Oelwein, officiating.
