Richard G. Moody, 72, of Waukon, died Thursday, November 4, 2004, at Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Waukon after a valiant fight with cancer. Services were held Monday, November 8 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon with Rev. Lynn Groe officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

Richard Gene Moody was born August 21, 1932, in Marquette, Iowa, the son of a railroad engineer Henry and mother Emma (Fortcamp) Moody. He graduated in 1950 from Marquette High School. In 1952 he enlisted in the US Air Force and was honorable discharged in 1956. He received his B.A. in teaching from Luther College in 1959 and obtained his Master's (M.A.) degree in Administration from UNI in 1964.

He touched the lives of many students throughout his teaching career in Iowa. He started his professional career by teaching the sixth grade from 1959 to 1965 in Guttenberg and La Porte City.

He then became an elementary school principal and worked for nine years in Eagle Grove. In 1974 he moved to Waukon where he served as elementary principal for 16 years. After retiring from education in 1990, he began working as an Employment Supervisor at T.A.S.C. (Teaching Adult Skills Center) in Waukon, working there 12 years.

On August 17, 1957, he married Joan Willert in Rockford, Iowa. Richard and Joan enjoyed a blessed life together and raised three children, Rick (Jamie) of West Salem, Wis.; and Mary Ann Moody and Brenda (Dave) Doughtery, both of Waukon.

He was baptized and confirmed at Decorah Lutheran Church in April of 1957. Since coming to Waukon he has been an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, serving as congregational president, deacon, and Sunday School Superintendent, as well as being a member of the Stewardship and Organ Committees. He also enjoyed singing in the choir.

His community involvement also included being a First Responder while he lived in Eagle Grove and serving several years on the Library Board in Waukon at the time of construction of the Robey Memorial Library.

His love of working with children was greatly reflected in the enjoyment he had in spending time with grandchildren, always creating new games, telling stories, and in subtle ways sharing his faith.

Richard is survived by his wife Joan; his children; five grandchildren, Stacia, Nick, Jacob, Heidi, and Ryan; sister Pat (Milton) Truman of Waucoma, Wis.; a sister-in-law, LaVon Moody of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Emma, and a brother Everette.

Casketbearers were Don Arndt, Ron Brandt, Dave Dougherty, Arnold Flessner, Chad Ness, George Pickett, and Milton, Truman.
