Shara J. Cota, 52, of Harpers Ferry, died December 23 at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien, WI following a brief illness. Services were held December 28 at St. Ann's-St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry with Fr. Louis Trzil officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery at Paint Rock in rural Harpers Ferry. The family requests memorials be made to a fund they have established in her name.
Shara Jean Cota was born April 15, 1947 in McGregor, the daughter of George and Lillian (Ayers) Thornton. She graduated from Mar-Mac High School and attended cosmetology college in Cedar Rapids. On December 2, 1967 she married James Leo Cota at St. Joseph's at Paint Rock Catholic Church in rural Harper's Ferry. The past five years she has been working for Culvers Restaurants, most recently as a crew trainer in helping set up new restaurants.
Shara was a member of St. Ann's-St Joseph's Catholic Church and its Rosary Society. She was also a member or the American Legion Auxiliary.
Shara is preceded in death by twin granddaughters, Shayla and Shelby Cota. Survivors include her husband James of Harpers Ferry, daughters Julie (Kevin) Fossum, Waterville, and Kay (Mike) Gabin, Lansing, son John, Harpers Ferry, parents George and Lillian Thornton, McGregor, father and mother-in-law Jerry and Marian Cota, Harpers Ferry, brothers Jerry (Sandy) Thornton and Dan (Denise) Thornton, both of McGregor, and five grandchildren.
Honorary casketbearers were Samantha, Paige and Collin Cota and Mikayla Gavin, James Fossum and Renee Van Vonderen. Casketbearers were Chad and Trampus Thornton, Jeff, Dave and Bill Cota and Mike Brown.
Martin Funeral Home of Waukon was in charge of the arrangements.
