Lester Carter, 68, of Des Moines, died Tuesday, March 19 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

The 2 p.m. funeral services were held Saturday, March 23 at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon with Pastor Larry Olson officiating. Burial, with military services at graveside, was in Oakland Cemetery. Hamilton Funeral Home of Des Moines was in charge of arrangements.

He was born Sept. 14, 1922 in Waukon to John and Myrtle Winters Carter and attended local schools. He served in the military during World War II, from Jan. 14, 1943 to Nov. 21, 1945. He farmed in the Waukon and Lansing areas before moving to Des Moines, and was a retired carpenter and a member of the retired carpenters organization.

Lester and Margaret Thornton were married Dec. 30, 1947; she died Sept. 24, 1983. Nov. 27, 1985 he married Gloria Sharp Grant in Des Moines.

Survivors include his wife, a daughter, Sharon Tesdall of Garden Grove, CA; a son, Merle Carter of Blue Grass; three stepchildren, Eva Buchholtz, Sheryl Sherwood and Steve Grant, all of Des Moines; eight grandchildren, and three great- grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Roy Carter of Klamath Falls, OR and Leo Carter of Waukon, and a sister, Mildred Johanningmeier of Monona.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Milton Carter, and a sister, Mary Kosta.

Casket bearers were Dennis Schlitter, Duane, Bill, and Bob Johanningmeier, Kerry Melcher, David and Brian Zimmerman, and Alan Thornton.
