HAROLD CHARLES HOFFMAN 1920-2000

Harold C. Hoffman, 80, of Waukon, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 26, 2000 at 11 a.m. at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon with Rev. James Walker officiating. Burial with graveside rites will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 25, at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Harold Charles Hoffman was born on April 27, 1920 in Stratford, WI, the son of Herman and Lida (Hagen) Hoffman. He attended rural school near Stratford and later came to Frankville, IA to work in the cheese factory.

On March 5, 1942 he married Marie Grotegut at the Salem United Church of Christ. Harold served in the US Army Infantry in 1942 and 1943. Following the service he worked at John Deere in Waterloo before farming in rural Frankville from 1943 until 1963. Then he started work for Home Gas Company, first in Waukon and later in Lamont, IA. From 1970 until he retired in 1982 he worked for Equity Co-op in Waukon.

Harold was a member of Salem United Church of Christ and the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Harold is preceded in death by his parents, 2 sons, Randal Alan and Ronald Lee, a grandson, Eric; 5 sisters: Hermina Johnston, Linda Rayner, Lorraine Zasada, Mabel Eake and Arlene Christopherson, and 3 brothers: Henry, Clarence and Arnold.

Survivors include his wife Marie of Waukon, 2 daughters: Marilyn (Chuck) Erding of Minneapolis, MN, and Donna (Steve) Scarpulla of Parker, CO; 2 sons, Marvin (Linda) of Cedar Rapids, and Harold Jr. (Dixie) of Aurora, IA; 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren; 1 sister, Nona (Elmer) Leffel of Stratford, WI and 3 brothers: Lyle (Marlene) of Edgar, WI, Herman (Gloria) of Rhinelander, WI and Elmer (Esther) of Colby, WI.

Casketbearers were Mike, John, and Tim Hoffman, Toshiaki Tawara, Bill Buehler, and Bob Baldwin.
