CHARLES H. HOTH 1871-1949

Funeral services were held Saturday for Charles H. Hoth, 77, at 2:00 o'clock in the home and at 2:30 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig officiating. Burial was in the Postville cemetery.

Mr. Hoth, farmer and business man, passed away at his home last Wednesday, from complications of old age. Charles H. Hoth was born September 26, 1871, near Griefswald, Germany, and departed this life on June 15, 1949, at his late home in Postville, aged 77 years.

At the age of nine years, Mr. Hoth, together with his mother and sister, left his native Germany and came to the United States. His first home in this country was about one mile south of Froelich, where he remained for approximately one year. The family then established their home near Gunder, on the present Ben Gulsvig farm. Mr. Hoth attended school in the Gunder vicinity and in the course of time went to work with the carpenters.

Mr. Hoth was united in marriage with Sophia Klemme of Waukon on February 25, 1899 at Waukon. To this union four children were born, all of whom survive the passing of their father.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Hoth engaged in farming and established their home on the farm now occupied by the Harvey Buddenbergs, near Postville, where they remained for about five years. They then purchased and moved to a farm east of Waukon.

While farming east of Waukon Mr. Hoth became interested in a hay mower. About 27 years ago the family moved to the city of Waukon, where Mr. Hoth continued to work on and perfect his hay mower. In 1918 the deceased, together with his family, moved to Postville, where he purchased the former canning factory and put his hay mower into production. About 20 years ago he sold his interest in the hay mower.

He then moved to his farm at Frankville, formerly owned by his mother and stepfather, and remained there until 1938. In 1938 he moved back to his late home in Postville, where he resided until his death.

Mr. Hoth is survived by four children: Elmer A. Hoth, Clarence C. Hoth, Florence Hoth, and Hazel (Mrs. William H. Behrens), all of Postville; six grandchildren: Charles John Hoth, Mary Louise and Kathryn Behrens, and Richard and Donald Hoth, all of Postville; one sister: Mrs. Herman Gipp of Ossian; three half brothers: William Schutta, Herman Schutta and John Schutta, all of Postville.

Mr. Hoth was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
