Mary Ann Hegeman Champion, 73, of Ankeny, Iowa, died Thursday, Novemeber 11, 2004, at Kavanagh House, West Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services where held Saturday, November 13 at Hanson Funeral Home, Waukon with Father Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Mary Ann was born February 9, 1931, in Waukon, the first child of Donald W. and Elizabeth "Betty" (Blake) Hegeman. She lived in Waukon until graduating from high school. She then attended the University, where she met the love of her life, Thomas Champion of Denison. Mary Ann and Thomas were united in marriage Februaru 13, 1950, at St. Patrick's Church in Waukon.
Mary Ann was a voracious reader of novels, fiction, magazines, and newspaper. She was a talented newspaper columnist who achieved awards for her columns, some of which were published in the Milwaukee Journal. She was a devoted mother and beloved wife who encouraged independence of the thought and strong values among family, friends, and acquaintances. She was also a charter member of the Smithsonian Institute and a member of AARP.
Survivors include three children and their families, Thomas G. Champion and wife Lynn and their daughter Devin, Mary Elizabeth Skeate and husband Jeff and their son John, and Jenny Ann Rinken and husband Dean and their daughter Katy. She is also survived by six siblings, William Hegeman of Rochester, Minn., Blake Hegeman of Kansas City, Mo., Jeanne Hegeman of Waukon, Jim Hegeman of Iowa City, Iowa, Therese Hegeman of Waukon, and Kathryn Meyer of Byron, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
