MARQUETTE, Ia. - Gary Howes, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Howes of rural Waukon, Ia., was killed late Friday morning in a one-car accident, one-quarter mile north of here on Iowa Highway 76.
The driver of the car, William Irons, 20, of Waukon, suffered a broken leg and lacerations.
The accident occurred when the auto went off the right side of the roadway, according to the Clayton County Sheriff's department. The vehicle crossed back to the left side of the highway, where it hit an embankment, officials said. Howes was thrown from the vehicle, which was a total loss.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Dorchester (Ia.) Methodist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Sunday at Martin Brothers Funeral Home in Waukon.
Surviving besides his parents are his grandmother, Mrs. Jessie Howes; three brothers, Richard of Des Moines, Ia., Paul of Bevington, Ia., and George, stationed with the U.S. Air Force at Westover AFB, Mass., and a sister, Mrs. Jerry (Janice) Jenkins of Rochester, Minn.Dubuque Telegraph-Herald, 4 Jul 1971 P 16 C 1
