Mrs. PETER (Mabel M. Meyer) MELAND

Funeral services for Mabel M. Meland, 84, were held Thursday, Aug. 29, 1980 at 10:30 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. The Rev. Julius L. Peterson officiated. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Mabel Martha Wilhelmine Meland was born July 19, 1896 at Postville, the daughter of David and Louise (Geldmeier) Meyer. She was baptized Oct. 18, 1896 and confirmed March 20, 1910.

She received her education in the Postville schools. She was married to Peter Meland, Feb. 28, 1917 at the home of her parents. The Melands have lived in Postville throughout their marriage. Mrs. Meland has been active in the life of St. Paul Church and has been a member of its women's organizations since 1919.

She was hospitalized at the Community Memorial Hospital where she died Tuesday morning, Aug. 26.

Surviving besides her husband are a son, Senator Harold Meland of Sitka, Alaska; two daughters: Mrs. Irene Sloan of Santa Rosa, Calif. and Mrs. Robert (Burnetta) Peterson of San Diego, Calif; and a brother, Elmer Meyer of Mesa, Ariz. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Harvey C. Meyer and Fred Meyer.

Note: Mrs. Irene Sloan was first married to Frederick T. Einck, who was killed by a bolt of lightning near Decorah. His obituary is posted in Winneshiek County, Iowa.
